Transformative Healthcare, a prominent player in medical transportation and logistics, announced the breach to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. The incident specifically involves Fallon Ambulance Service, a Massachusetts-based medical transportation provider and a division of Transformative Healthcare. Fallon Ambulance Service, known for its emergency response services in the greater Boston area, also managed administrative tasks for affiliated medical transport companies.

The breach’s roots trace back to December 2022, when Fallon Ambulance Service was integrated into Coastal Medical Transportation Systems, leading to the cessation of its operations. In adherence to legal requirements for data retention, Transformative Healthcare retained an archived copy of the data previously managed by Fallon’s computer systems.

The breach came to light on April 21, 2023, when Transformative Healthcare detected unauthorized activities in its archive environment. Immediate measures were taken to block further unauthorized access. A subsequent forensic investigation revealed that an unauthorized entity accessed the archive as early as February 17, 2023. The unauthorized access continued until April 22, 2023, during which time the perpetrator copied files from the archive.

Upon reviewing the affected files, it was confirmed on December 27, 2023, that the breached data included sensitive information. The compromised data consisted of names, addresses, Social Security numbers, medical details including COVID-19 testing and vaccination records, and employment-related information provided to Fallon.

Despite the breach and extraction of data from the archive, there has been no evidence so far to suggest that the data has been misused. As a precautionary measure, affected patients were notified via mail on December 27, 2023. Transformative Healthcare has also taken the responsible step of offering credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to the individuals affected by this breach.

This incident underscores the growing challenges in safeguarding sensitive personal and medical information in the digital age. It highlights the need for robust cybersecurity measures and vigilant monitoring of data, especially in sectors dealing with highly sensitive information like healthcare. As Transformative Healthcare navigates the aftermath of this breach, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats to data privacy and security.
